START YOUR PERSONAL TRAINING BUSINESS THE RIGHT WAY!

Getting clients is the first problem for personal trainersIf you have recently become a certified personal trainer, you are facing a unique set of problems that are largely ignored by the rest of the fitness industry. Ten years ago, I would have paid fortunes to have answers to these dilemmas, as it seemed that none of the educators at the top of the industry seemed to remember what it was like as you scraped and struggled to get your first few clients!

Problem One: Getting your first personal training clients

Obvious, really; without clients you have no business and no income. It’s all very well spending time and money marketing yourself to get people in front of you, but if you can’t sell personal training to them, it’s all for nothing. It’s a well known fact that most personal trainers let a lot of business slip away, simply because they aren’t comfortable with the sales aspect of the job.

Problem Two: Convincing everyone that you are the expert

You need to gain credibility fast within your immediate local area, because this is the most reliable way to keep a stream of new clients coming in. It’s a challenge when you first qualify; you may feel that you haven’t served enough time to really know your stuff, but you will know more than most of the general public, and you must remember that.

Everyone knows that word of mouth and personal recommendation is the best form of marketing there is, and the best PTs will get the majority of their new clients in this manner, which frees up more time for relaxing and doing things they enjoy.

Problem Three: Gaining skills and experience

When I started, I was constantly second guessing myself, wondering if what I was doing was the best possible option for my client, and if it was going to get them the results that they wanted. I found it hard to take what I had read in the text books and apply it to real people who couldn’t make an exercise look the way it was supposed to, and weren’t motivated enough to try very hard either!

In some ways there is no substitute for years of service, however there is more information available than ever before. You will make mistakes for sure, but that’s how we learn. It’s important to keep an open mind, and if one strategy doesn’t work, don’t be afraid to try another.
